“Everything Happens for a Reason” considers the internal struggle of coming to terms with loss and misfortune and why we’re lead down rigid pathways towards certain, unfavorable ends— some of which may have no resolution. We have no choice but to convince ourselves that every hardship must have meaning. In our head we hear the reminder echo, as the chorus does, that “everything happens for a reason.” This thought, guided by indignant vocals and abrasive chorus, suggests that this pathway of coping might be the only one we’re given when all other explanations have failed. As the song comes to an end, we depart with a feeling of unease, a feeling that hardships may have no rhyme or reason at all, but the melody refrains.
